Senior Trey Swearingen scored his jersey number on Senior Day, but even his 30 points weren't enough for Monmouth to hold off Ripon, falling 70-56 to the Red Hawks at Glennie Gym, dropping the Scots into fourth place in the Midwest Conference.
Ripon hit nearly half their shots in the first half, but despite Monmouth's cold shooting the Scots trailed by just 10 going into the final 20 minutes. The Red Hawks increased their lead in the first two minutes of the second half before the Scots rallied when D.J. Swift took a Swearingen feed for a jumper, followed by a Justin Batterton bucket inside. Swearingen then hit back-to-back 3-pointers, to pull the Scots to 38-30 with 15:32 to play. The Red Hawks then heated up in the final 10 minutes to put the game out of reach.
Swearingen was the only Scot in double figures, hitting 10-of-15 shots from the floor, including an 8-of-13 effort from 3-point range.
The Scot sit in fourth for the final MWC berth with two games to play. They'll travel to Cornell Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season Saturday at St. Norbert.
