Monmouth Ready to Begin Another Streak After Tournament Loss

Two Fighting Scots' streaks ended Friday in the first round of the North Central Tournament. Entering the opening match with Rose-Hulman, the Scots had won nine straight sets to open the season with a 3-0 mark.

The Engineers derailed the Scots' plans for a fourth straight win, holding off Monmouth in a close set when the Scots closed within two late at 19-17 on a kill by Karlie Drish. That would be as close as Monmouth would come down the stretch in Set 1, falling 25-19.

An early deficit proved too much to overcome in the second set as the Scots rallied from a 13-5 hole. Monmouth chipped away to cut the margin to 21-17 before running out of gas.

The Scots nearly prolonged the match in Set 3 as they took an early 7-4 lead before RHIT clawed back to nip the Scots 25-23.

Riley Cook paced Monmouth with an eight-kill effort while hitting at a .400 clip and Lauren Sperry added seven winners, hitting .357.

Monmouth faces host North Central Saturday morning at 10 and wrap up the trip with a noon match against Coe.
