Monmouth Soccer Opens Season with 4-0 Loss at Loras
Home opener set for Friday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/14/2021) — The Monmouth College mens's soccer team made their season debut on Monday night and held Loras College scoreless for a half before falling 4-0. The contest was also the debut for head coach Ian Hatleli who was hired in May 2020.
The game was scoreless into the 49th minute as Scots goal keeper Marcos Garibay (Waukegan, Illinois) made five saves in the first half. Loras got on the board at 48:33 with an unassisted goal.
Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) put a shot on goal just two minutes later but Loras got the save. Seth Anderson (Galesburg, Illinois) came off the bench and gave the Scots a burst of energy with two shots on goal in a three-minute span as the game went past the hour mark.
"I thought we played hard and worked hard all game long," said Hatleli. "Very proud of the effort all game long and our guys put a good shift in tonight."
The contest remained 1-0 for the next 24 minutes but the Duhawks put it away in a five-minute span. Reed Miklavcic scored twice and Michael Brandt had a goal between those strikes as Loras went from 1-0 up to 4-0 up with 77:05 to play.
The Scots will play four times this week. The next contest is against Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The home opener is set for Friday at 2 p.m. against Buena Vista and the Scots host Dubuque at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
"We are excited to get out in front of the home fans this weekend," said Hatleli. "We've seen the good support around campus for volleyball, football and women's soccer and we can't wait to play in front of the Scots fans."
