Monmouth Spikers Defend Home Court, Open Season with Pair of Wins

Monmouth, IL (08/31/2019) — New Monmouth College volleyball coach Emily Thebeau is off to a good start after her Fighting Scots handled Lincoln Christian University 3-1 and rolled by Principia 3-0 at the season-opening Monmouth College Volleyball Invitational on Saturday.

LCU edged the Scots 25-19 in the day's opening set, but the Scots finished the day winning their final six sets. Monmouth took advantage of the Red Lions' trouble at the net in Set 2, rolling to a 25-13 win. The Scots kept the momentum rolling with 25-22, 25-19 wins in Sets 3 and 4 for the win behind a 10-kill effort by Hannah Jones and nine from Ashley Farris.

Led by Riley Cook's 12 kills and .476 average, Monmouth lands a .324 average in the straight set win over Principia. The Scots were pushed to the limit in Set 1 before pulling out a 26-24 win. They steadily built their advantage in the next two sets, winning 25-19 and 25-13 to finish the weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.

The Scots host Eureka Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before heading to the North Central Invitational Sept. 6-7.
