Morgan Nets Career-High 20 as Scots Win at Lake Forest

Monmouth Wins Conference Opener

MONMOUTH, Ill. (12/01/2021) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team put three players in double figures as they won the Midwest Conference opener 72-63 at Lake Forest Tuesday night. The win moves the Scots to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in MWC play as Josie Morgan (Washington, Illinois) scored a career-high 20 points.

The Scots got off to a good early start with Morgan leading the way. She scored the first basket of the game and had five points in the first quarter. Kaitlyn Osmulski (Peoria, Illinois) added four points in the first quarter as Monmouth led 13-12 after one.

The teams traded baskets for much of the second quarter with neither getting a big advantage. At halftime the Scots had a 28-24 lead with Morgan on top of the scoring column with eight points.

The Scots went up 32-26 early in the third quarter before a 9-0 run put the Foresters ahead 35-32. Monmouth responded with a big run of their own and the 10-2 spurt put the Scots up 42-37. Lake Forest got it back to within two, 45-43 at the end of the quarter.

A Morgan 3-pointer pushed the lead to seven in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and didn't let up. Zoie Wall (Peoria, Illinois) and Lily Harlan (Washington, Illinois) each scored a basket and free throws from Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Illinois) put the Scots up 60-51 with 4:43 left.

Lake Forest cut the lead to five but Mitchell hit a 3-pointer with 1:28 to play. Morgan made a layup with 50 seconds left for an eight-point lead and after a Foresters basket, Osmulski finished the scoring by making 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

Morgan led the Scots with 20 points and she made 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Osmulski had 12 points while Tarae Warner (Burlington, Iowa) had 10. Wall led the Scots with 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Jordan Kintigh (Goshen, Indiana) had eight points and seven rebounds while both Mitchell and Harlan scored seven points.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Wall led the Scots with four assists...The Scots made eight 3-pointers and held Lake Forest to 4-of-17 from beyond the arc...Monmouth out-rebounded Lake Forest 47-32 with 15 offensive rebounds...The Scots had a 19-8 advantage on second-chance points..The Scots are 4-0 when scoring at least 72 points...The Scots host Beloit College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, following the men's game between Monmouth and Beloit.
