Murray Scores Twice, Scots Shutout BVU

by Patrick Curry Jr./Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/14/2025) — On Saturday, Monmouth College Men's Soccer team faced off against Buena Vista University and won 3-0. The Fighting Scots (2-2-1) have won two straight games with Owen Murray (Cedar City, Utah) scoring two goals in consecutive games.

The Scots scored a goal in the 28th minute as Murray raced half the field to convert off an assist by Aimillios Ioannou (Lanarca, Cyprus) for the lead. The goal was the third of the season for Murray.

"As a striker that's something that I think about and kind of just to put the team on my back at times and do the work to get the goals and I'm glad I was able to do that today and play better recently," said Murray.

Ioannou scored a goal of his own 11 minutes into the second half with Isaac Price (Geneseo, Illinois) picking up the assist. Less than a minute later Murray headed in another goal, off an assist by Price, to put the Scots up 3-0.

The team seemed to be clicking on all cylinders after coming back from half time. "The boys played with confidence for 90 minutes and that's something we haven't necessarily done this year," said head coach Ian Hatleli. "When we went up 1-0 we weren't satisfied with that and we kept working harder and putting pressure on them and eventually they broke because of the pressure that we were putting on them."

The Scots knew that in order to win they would need to give it their all for all 90 minutes because that is something their coach constantly emphasized and it can be seen in the players. "I feel like we were more confident today," said Ioannou "I think we dominated physically and tactically today. I feel like we had a lot more passion to win and wanted the win to get those goals and so, I think it just comes down to who wanted it more."

Goalkeeper Luis Villa (El Paso, Texas) made four saves to secure his second win and second shutout of the season.
