Near Record Rounds in Opener for Scots Women Linksters

by Dan Nolan

Monmouth, IL (09/02/2019) — Haley Hoekstra and Morgan Bemis flirted with Monmouth College women's golf records while Mamie Ambrosch fired an ace in the Scots' season debut at the Highland Classic in Rock Island Saturday and Sunday.

The Scots fired a 325 - the second-lowest 18-hole round in program history - in Saturday's opener and carded a 337 on Sunday to post a 662, 36-hole total - also the second-best 36-hole score in the history of women's golf at Monmouth.

Hoekstra - the program record-holder - carded the second-best round of her career Saturday, firing a 77 - the same day Ambrosch sank a hole-in-one on No. 8 en route to carding an opening round 82. Dani Freeman matched Ambrosch's 82 - albeit without the aid of an ace - and Morgan Bemis rounded out the Day 1 scoring rounds with an 84. Jessi Haines checked in Saturday with a non-scoring round of 94.

Bemis led the team on Sunday, firing a career-best 81 - the sixth-best score in Scots' history - to finish with a 165, placing 26th in the 70-player field. Hoekstra was a stroke behind on Sunday's 18 with an 82, giving her a two-day total of 159 - the second-best 36-hole score in Monmouth history - to place 13th.

Ambrosch wrapped up the weekend with an 86 for a 168 final while Freeman toured the course with an 88 for a 170 total. Haines slipped to a 102 Sunday for a 196.

The Scots next host the Fighting Scot Invitational Sept. 7-8 at Gibson Woods Golf Course.
