Newcomers Carry Scots' Scoring at Water Polo Tournament
Monmouth, IL (09/29/2019) — A pair of rookies scored half the goals for the Monmouth College men's water polo team at the Washington and Jefferson Round Robin Tournament in Pennsylvania Sept. 28-29.
Freshmen Joseph Addison and Kaveh Moaddeli scored eight goals each for the weekend, but couldn't push the Scots to a weekend win.
Host Washington and Jefferson took a narrow 4-3 lead in the tournament opener and went on to clip the Scots 16-11. Trailing 3-1 early in the first quarter, the Scots climbed back with goals by Addison - on his way to a four-goal game, matching Moaddeli's opening effort - and Eli Kebschull. The Presidents upped the lead to 6-3 before the Scots again rallied with a pair of Jesus Aguirre goals. By halftime, the Scots trailed by one at 8-7, but W&J pulled away with a 5-1 third quarter advantage.
Jared Hankinson pumped in four goals in the tournament's second match, an 18-12 loss to Salem International. Salem raced out to a 6-0 lead and was never threatened despite the Scots' nine-goal fourth quarter rally.
Addison and Aguirre netted three goals each in Sunday's finale, a 19-14 loss to Connecticut College. Monmouth took an early 2-0 lead on first quarter goals by Hankinson and Addison, but the Camels answered to take a 5-4 lead after the opening period. The Scots and Camels traded the lead throughout the second quarter and were knotted 7-7 at the half. Kebschull gave the Scots their only lead in the second half, finding the net in the first 30 seconds of the third period for an 8-7 lead. Connecticut College responded with three straight goals to end the Scots chances at a weekend-closing win.
Monmouth returns home to host a two-day round robin tournament Oct. 12-13.
