Monmouth jumped on top of Grinnell 2-0 in the first half, but two late goals by the Pioneers handed the Scots a 4-3 loss Saturday afternoon for the Scots' Senior Day.
Alvaro Alvarez scored in the 17th minute and again in the 32nd on assists by Kai Jones and Lucas Sondgeroth as the Scots kept their hopes of a Midwest Conference postseason berth alive. Grinnell trimmed the margin to 2-1 with a goal in the 40th minute and knotted the game at 2-all just three minutes into the second half. The score stayed knotted until Sondgeroth took a Nicolas Esparon feed and punched it in with 18 minutes to play. Grinnell countered, again tying the game, with a goal in the 80th minute and then took the lead for good on a score two minutes later.
The Scots, currently tied with Cornell for fifth in the MWC, will need to win their final game next Saturday at Ripon and get some help to qualify for their first MWC Tournament since winning the playoffs in 2001.
