Monmouth will have to start a new win streak after their four-game streak came to a close Tuesday night when the University of Dubuque edged the Scots 10-9 in double overtime. The streak tied the program record for the longest win streak and set the record for a season-opening streak.
Jeff Knapp's goal with 1:42 left in regulation knotted the game at 9-9, eventually sending the game into OT. Neither team scored in the first extra session and the second overtime appeared to be headed for another draw until the Spartans netted the game-winner with less than a minute left.
The game began as a defensive battle as the Scots held the Spartans to just a single goal in the first 15 minutes. Dubuque erupted with a four-goal second quarter to take a 5-1 halftime lead and climbed to an 8-2 advantage in the third period before the Scots made a hard charge over the last 23 minutes of regulation.
Thomas Van Alstine's back-to-back goals as the third quarter wound down gave Monmouth the momentum heading into the final 15 minutes. Trailing 8-4 as the fourth quarter got underway, Knapp netted back-to-back goals less than a minute apart and TVA scored two minutes later to pull the Scots within one at 8-7 with 9:43 to play. UD inched ahead by two at 9-7 with 3:47 left on the clock before Knapp's third goal sent the game into OT.
The OT loss offset freshman goalkeeper Teagan Simons' 19-save effort.
Monmouth returns home to face the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Saturday at 1 p.m.
