Scots' Johnson is Coach of the Year, Trio Earn All-MWC Men's Soccer Honors

Monmouth, IL (11/14/2019) — A record-setting year culminating with the Fighting Scots' first trip to the Midwest Conference Tournament since 2001 has netted Monmouth College's men's soccer coach Kooten Johnson the league's Coach of the Year honor and players Alvaro Alvarez (Madrid, Spain), Martin Zafirov (Sydney, Australia) and Jaxon Coleman (Washington, Ill./Washington) their first all-conference awards.

In his seventh season, Johnson led the Scots to nine wins, tying for the second most wins in program history and the most since the 2001 MWC Tournament team. The Scots posted a school-record eight shutouts in 2019, holding opponents to 23 goals in 18 games for a 1.28 goals against average - all program records.

Named to the first team, Alvarez paced the Scots with 10 goals, 21 points and four game-winning goals. Playing in all 18 contests, the junior business major posted a .659 shot on goal percentage.

Coleman, who was named the league's Newcomer of the Year, and Zafirov anchored Monmouth's defense and picked up second team honors. The tandem played in all 18 games. A senior business and economics major, Zafirov also netted two goals and one assist. A freshman biology major, Coleman is the son of Julie Kaiser and Leland Coleman.
