Scots Drop Pair on Friday as IC Pitcher Tosses Perfect Game
Ashby delivers Monmouth's only hit in DH
MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/18/2025) — The Monmouth College softball team dropped a pair of Midwest Conference games at home to Illinois College on Friday. The Fighting Scots (4-26, 0-8) did not have a base runner in a 13-0 game one loss and dropped game two 2-0.
Game one was scoreless until the second inning as IC scored an unearned run off Monmouth starter Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington). They added two more in the third inning with a single, two stolen bases, a double and another single.
IC made it 4-0 in the fourth inning before Durfee escaped the inning with a runner on third. The inning started with an error, leading to the unearned run.
The Lady Blues added a run in the sixth and with a runner on base, Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) came out of the bullpen and IC pushed the lead to 7-0 with two straight singles. All nine IC batters reached and scored with no outs as a grand slam gave them a 13-0 lead.
The Scots went in order in the seventh as IC pitcher Jordan Closs finished off the perfect game with her 14th strikeout. Durfee (0-8) took the loss with four earned runs allowed over six innings as she struck out two.
GAME TWO
Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) led off the bottom of the first with a single, Monmouth's firs base runner and first hit of the day. Neither team scored in the first six innings as Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin, Iowa) matched zeroes with the IC starter.
The Lady Blues led off the seventh with a solo home run to lead 1-0. A single, stolen base and a 2-out single doubled the lead. Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate but a strikeout and flyout ended the game.
Hefflefinger (1-7) took the loss despite tossing a complete game. She allowed six hits and struck out one.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Monmouth had one hit in 14 innings on the day while drawing three walks ... Hefflefinger leads the team with three complete games on the season ... Lewis moved past Jen Witmer into eighth on the career games played list with 132IC is 9-0-1 in the last 10 against Monmouth with the last Scots victory coming on April 14, 2021 ... The Scots play a 1 p.m. DH at home against Beloit on Saturday.
