Scots Fall at Cornell on Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (01/03/2026) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team returned to Midwest Conference action with a 65-29 loss at Cornell (7-4, 1-2) on Saturday. The Fighting Scots (4-9, 0-4) return home on Wednesday after playing three road games this week.

Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer 38 seconds into the game and neither team scored for the next three minutes. The Rams took a 6-3 lead before Kiersten Cox (Illinois City, Illinois) knocked down a jumper. Layla Rice (Rock Island, Illinois) tied the game with a 3-pointer before Cornell scored five in a row for a 13-8 lead. Hoy made a free throw to end the quarter with the Rams up 13-9.

Down 15-10, Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) made a free throw, as did Cox. Cornell pushed the lead to 21-11 before Tiah Riggs (Vincennes, Indiana) made a layup with 2:29 to play in the half, Monmouth's first bucket of the quarter. Riggs scored again but Cornell pushed the lead to 30-15. Hoy hit a 3-pointer to end the half with the Scots down 12.

The Rams scored the first four points of the third quarter before Riggs got Monmouth on the board. A 6-0 run put the hosts up by 20 before Cox made a layup. Another 10-0 run gave Cornell a 50-22 lead before Rice scored the final points of the quarter.

The Rams scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to lead 62-24. Ava Pelaez (Aurora, Colorado) ended the scoring drought at 7:52 with a 3-pointer and Hannah Peel (Gladwin, Michigan) added a bucket for the final score.

Hoy led the Scots with seven points while Riggs had six. Riggs led Monmouth with eight rebounds and six steals while Stearns had three assists.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Riggs posted a career-high six steals ... The 29 points are a season low ... The Scots scored 35 at home against Lawrence on Dec. 13 ... Stearns is the 17th player in Monmouth history with at least 200 career 3-pointers attempted ... Rice made her first career 3-pointer ... Cornell leads the all-time series 40-32 with six straight wins ... Monmouth's last win in Mount Vernon was on Jan, 31, 2019 ... The teams play in Monmouth on Jan. 27 ... The Scots play at home on Wednesday against Ripon.
