Scots Fall to Cornell on Tuesday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (01/28/2026) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team put three players in double figures but lost at home to Cornell 75-50 on Tuesday night. The Fighting Scots (6-13, 2-8) will host Beloit on Saturday for Senior Day.
Cornell started the game on a 14-0 run before Tiah Riggs (Vincennes, Indiana) connected on a baseline jumper. Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) and Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) scored baskets as part of a 6-0 run before the Rams pushed the lead to 17-6. Stearns made a layup as the first quarter ended for a 17-8 score.
Stearns and Riggs scored in the first minutes of the second half with Cornell leading 21-12. Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) scored five straight points, including a 3-pointer. The Rams finished the half on a run to lead 36-17 at the break.
Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) started the second half with a 3-point play and another basket in the paint. Riggs scored the next four points for the Scots as Cornell led 42-26. Sellers scored four more points to push her quarter total to nine and Riggs added a bucket in the paint. Cornell pushed the lead back to 17 before Jamaica Walker (Mobile, Alabama) scored off a steal. Riggs got another bucket but Cornell scored at the end of the quarter to lead 51-36.
Cornell scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to lead by 22 before Walker scored on a layup. Sellers scored again to get into double digits and Stearns hit a 3-pointer beforeCornell pushed the lead to 25. Stearns made a free throw, and Riggs hit two, trimming the Rams lead to 68-48. Hannah Peel (Gladwin, Michigan) scored Monmouth's last basket before the Rams scored the final five points of the game to win 75-50.
Riggs led the team with 13 points while Sellers scored 11 and Stearns added 10. Sellers led the team with six rebounds and Stearns had five. Rangel and Peel both had two assists. Rangel led the Scots with four steals while Peel and Sellers both had blocks.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Rangel had a career-high four steals ... All of Sellers' 11 points came in the second half ... She scored a career-high 11 points and was 5-for-6 from the field ... Riggs has been in double digits four times and Stearns has been in double figures 11 times ... Rangel moved into a tie for 10th with Carley Turnbull on the career 3-pointers made list with 73 ... Cornell won at home 65-29 on Jan. 3 ... Cornell leads the all-time series 41-32 with seven straight wins ...
