Scots in Contention After First Round of SLIAC Championships
Monmouth, IL (10/07/2019) — Playing in their inaugural St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Women's Golf Championships, Monmouth College is within striking distance of a league title while three Scots are in contention for all-conference honors.
Vying for her fourth all-league honor after three straight Midwest Conference awards, senior Haley Hoekstra leads the Scots after Monday's first round of the SLIAC Championships at The Links Golf Course in Jacksonville. Hoekstra toured the par 72 course with an 81, putting her in sole possession of seventh place with 18 holes to play in Tuesday's final round. The top five golfers are awarded first team honors while the next five are named to the second team.
Searching for her first all-league honor, junior Mamie Ambrosch is a stroke back of Hoekstra with an 82, tying her for eighth. Dani Freeman checked in with an 85 and Morgan Bemis finished the Scots' scoring rounds with a 93. Jessi Haines checked into the clubhouse with a 98.
Monmouth's 341 team score puts then in a solid fourth after Monday's round, four strokes behind third place Lake Forest and eight back of Illinois College. Grinnell leads the 12 team field with a SLIAC Championship record score of 321, the score Monmouth shot on the same course one week ago to win the IC Fall Invitational.
The teams resume play Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. to complete the 36-hole tournament.
