Scots Making Strides at Weekend Tourney
Monmouth opened Saturday at the North Central Tournament with a convincing 25-14 Set 1 win over the hosts, but were clipped in the next three sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 to suffer their second loss at the tourney. The Scots rolled off the final six points in the opening set, but had a tougher time in the remainder of the contest. North Central gradually pulled away in Set 2 and edged the Scots late in the final two sets despite a .444 average on eight kills by Riley Cook.
The Scots fell behind Coe in the final match, 25-16 and 25-13 before coming back with a 27-25 win in Set 3. The match slipped away in the fourth set when Coe took an 18-9 lead in downing the Scots 25-15. Lauren Sperry paced Monmouth with a 10-kill effort, one more than Cook's 9.
Monmouth returns to tournament play Sept. 13-14 at the Knox College Invitational.
