Monmouth outshot the University of Northwestern-St. Paul 62-34, but came up on the short end of the score in Saturday's 12-8 loss at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.

The teams played nearly even through the first three quarters after the Eagles took a 4-3 edge at the half. Monmouth had gained an early lead on Shane Herkert's man-up goal at the 8:47 mark of the first quarter. UNW then punched in the next two as the teams traded goals until the fourth quarter.

The Scots had rallied from a 6-3 third period hole with three straight scores. Jeff Knapp's blast started the run at the 6:15 mark and Chase Cranford launched his goal two minutes later. Liam Meyer then assisted on Joe Incorvati's game-tying goal with 1:06 left in the third. The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the final 30 seconds of the frame and added three straight goals in the fourth to put the game away.

Game 2 of Monmouth's five-game home stand is set for Sat., Mar. 14 with a 3 p.m. faceoff against Marian.
