Scots Play to 0-0 Draw in Home Opener
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/12/2024) — The Monmouth College men's soccer team played a 0-0 draw against Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the home opener on Thursday. The Fighting Scots (2-2-1) picked up their second shutout of the season but were held without a goal for the first time in six games.
Monmouth outshot UWSP 17-11 for the game and both teams had big chances to score. Monmouth goalkeeper Alejandro Zamarripa (El Paso, Texas) made five saves in the first half to keep the Pointers off the board. Kristofer Ruiz-Camarena (El Paso Texas) and Omar Portillo (El Paso, Texas) both missed shots just over the crossbar in the first half.
Owen Murray (Cedar City, Utah) had a shot saved late in the second half and the UWSP keeper dove to his left to barely stop a header from Parker Davis (Burlington, Iowa) late in the game as well. Monmouth nearly found a winner in the last minute but Ruiz-Camarena's shot with 25 seconds left hit the post and bounced out of the goal.
Luis Villa (El Paso, Texas) played in goal for the second half and made two saves. Monmouth finished the game up a man as UWSP picked up a red card with 5:46 to play but the game ended goalless.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Treyton Yi (Streamwood, Illinois) played all 90 minutes for the fifth straight game ... Davis and Tanner Faivre (Earlville, Illinois) also played all 90 minutes while Murray logged 83 ... Murray and Ruiz-Camarena both took four shots ... Davis had two shots on goal ... Monmouth had six corner kicks to just two for UWSP ... The teams had never met before Thursday ... The Scots play at Coe College on Saturday in a double header with the women ... The next home game is Sept. 25 against Millikin.
