Senior Trey Swearingen poured in a career-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range as Monmouth shot well over 50 percent from the floor and the arc in an 88-78 win over Lawrence at Glennie Gym Saturday afternoon.

Swearingen came off the bench as Monmouth held the bench scoring edge 36-2 to keep the Scots in a tie for second in the Midwest Conference. Dee Hyler's fast break 3-pointer early in the second half spotted the Scots to a 50-39 lead, but the Vikings closed the gap to 54-48 before Swearingen's back-to-back 3-balls pushed Monmouth lead back to double digits.

Another Swearingen three gave Monmouth their largest lead of the night at 69-53 with 9:30 left before LU put together one last surge. The Vikings charged in the final five minutes with a 12-4 run, but ran out of gas as Tyler Houston's bucket in the lane stopped the bleeding. Houston's points in the paint with 43 seconds left pushed Monmouth ahead 86-77 as the Scots defense held in the final seconds.

Monmouth hosts rival Knox Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Glennie Gym.
