Scots Score Three Unanswered to Beat Grinnell
Sam Koppers Scores Overtime Winner
MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/13/2021) — The Monmouth College Fighting Scots women's soccer team trailed 2-0 at halftime on Tuesday night but rallied for a thrilling 3-2 overtime road win over Grinnell. Erica Bossard (Pella, Iowa) and Kaylee Doebert (Mount Horeb, Wisconsin) scored in the second half before Sam Koppers (Tinley Park, Illinois) hit the game winner.
Grinnell took the lead just over five minutes into the game and made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute. The game stayed 2-0 through halftime as Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) made six saves in the first 45 minutes.
The Scots got on the board early in the second half as Bossard scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Shelby Sims (Peoria, Illinois). That goal game at 50:48 and the Scots tied the game 18 minutes later when Doebert put one in the middle of the goal.
"The way this team dug their way out of a tough situation was incredible," said coach Lucas Henderson. "Games like this are a gift."
Neither team scored in the final 20 minutes of regulation or in the first 10 minutes of overtime. With 3:05 to play in the second overtime, Koppers scored her second goal of the season and second is as many games on an assist by Hadyn DeLeeuw (Kirksville, Missouri).
"We got fantastic games out of Doebert, Bossard and DeLeeuw today along with so many others," said Henderson.
Monmouth outshot Grinnell 21-19 for the game and led shots on goal 12-11. Selquist finished with nine saves as the Scots improved to 2-2 in Midwest Conference play. They have a week off before traveling to Jacksonville, Illinois next Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game at Illinois College.
