Scots Score Twice but Fall to Dubuque 3-2
Jordyn Gosell, Jaedyn Mitchell score for Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/11/2021) — The Monmouth College Fighting Scots women's soccer team came within 21 minutes of a win on Friday night but eventually lost 3-2 at Peacock Park. The Scots got their first two goals of the season, and their first lead of the season but the Spartans got the win.
Dubuque came into the game with a 2-1 record and they struck first as Emma Kober scored in the 18th minute for the 1-0 lead. The Scots answered 16 minutes later with their first goal of the season. Sophie Roberts (Dunlap, Illinois) made a great pass and Jaedyn Mitchell (Rockford, Illinois) used her speed to break away from the Spartans defenders and slot home the goal.
The game stayed tied into halftime as the Spartans outshot the Scots 5-3. Just over seven minutes into the second half the Scots won a corner kick. Erica Bossard (Pella, Iowa) took the corner and got the ball to Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) and the senior gave Monmouth a 2-1 lead.
"Jordyn and Sophie really showed us some strong play tonight," said coach Lucas Henderson. "Jaedyn made a great impact as well."
For nearly 17 minutes the Scots held onto that 2-1 lead as the sunlight faded. Dubuque kept the pressure going and they scored twice in 95 seconds to take the lead. Molly Schiltz tied the game at 69:24 and Kober put in her own rebound at 70:59 go put the Spartans up 3-2.
Monmouth kept the pressure going late but couldn't find a third goal though they came close a couple of times through Mitchell and Bossard.
"Tonight's game is one we are definitely going to learn from," said Henderson. "We haven't put all the pieces together yet but we are taking steps in the right direction."
