by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/03/2021) — The Monmouth College football team picked up their first shutout of the season with a 42-0 win at Lawrence on Saturday. The Scots scored 21 points in the first quarter and led 35-0 at half while improving to 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Midwest Conference.

After turning the ball over on the first drive, the Scots scored on four straight possessions in the first half. Riley Fetterer (Milan, Illinois) put the Scots up 7-0 with a 30-yard pass to Nathan Graham (Monticello, Illinois) to cap a 6-play, 78-yard drive.

Fetterer picked up another touchdown pass on the next drive as he found Jake Uryasz (Farmington, Illinois) for a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead. Running back Devin Lawrence (Hawthorne, Florida), returning from injury, put the Scots up 21-0 with a 34-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter.

"It was great to get Devin back on the field," said head coach Chad Braun. "We executed at a really high level in the first half on offense."

The offense kept going in the second quarter with two more scores. Fetterer hit Uryasz for a 30-yard touchdown on the first dive of the quarter. Right before halftime, Fetterer got the ball to Graham on a short pass and the senior did the rest, going 25 yards to the end zone for a 35-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the fourth quarter. Freshman running back Josh Bozzaco (Winter Springs, Florida) found the end zone for the first time in his Monmouth career with a 7-yard score with 7:17 to play.

The defense was led by senior Korbyn Personett (Pittsfield, Illinois) who had a career-high four sacks to go with five tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. Tevin Baker (Kewanee, Illinois) added 1.5 sacks while both Devin Graham (Monticello, Illinois) and Jalen Williams (Lakeland, Florida) had interceptions.

"Defensively that was the most complete game we have played all year," said Braun. "We were really physical and did a great job getting after the quarterback.

Fetterer finished 16-of-26 for 246 yards and four touchdowns while also throwing two interceptions. Freshman Ashton Summers (Mt. Zion, Illinois) made his varsity debut going 1-for-2 for six yards. Graham had 79 yards on three catches while Uryasz also caught three passes, going for 45 yards.

Bozzaco had a team-leading 89 rushing yards on 15 carries while Fetterer ran for 83 yards. Lawrence had three carries for 47 yards and Henderson Francois (Naples, Florida) had nine carries for 29 yards. Lawrence also caught two passes for 53 yards.

"I thought our guys handled the first overnight trip great and came out ready to play today," said Braun.
