Scots Sweep Principia on Tuesday
Monmouth racks up 40 kills, 12 aces in 3-0 win
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/14/2022) — The Monmouth College volleyball team returned home and cruised to a straight-sets win over Principia College on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots won 25-4, 25-9, 25-8 in the non-conference match to move to 3-5 on the season.
The first set was tied 3-3 before Sarah LaHood (East Peoria, Illinois) went on serve. She served 13 straight points, including two aces, to give Monmouth a 16-3 lead. After the Panthers won a point, the Scots took the next eight points to win the set 25-4 with 16 kills. Monmouth hit .600 in the first set with only one error.
The Scots had a similar run in the second set as they went from leading 6-5 to leading 16-6. After the Panthers took a couple points, the Scots finished off the set with two straight. Monmouth hit .257 in the second set with 11 kills and two errors.
Principia took their only lead of the match by winning the first point of the third set. The Scots went on another run in the middle of the set to take control. Monmouth had 13 kills in the final set and hit .478 to take the set 25-8.
On the night, Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) led the way with 13 kills while Kenzie Russell (Morton, Illinois) had eight. Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) had six kills, LaHood had five and Cece Palladino (Volo, Illinois) had five.
Paige Bergschneider (Alexander, Illinois) led the Scots with 17 assists while Abby Droege (Jerseyville, Illinois) had 14. Savannah Robinson (Delavan, Illinois) had 10 digs as four Scots had at least six on the match. Brynn Hogan (Galena, Missouri) and LaHood combined for a block. Monmouth had 12 aces on the night, three each from LaHood and Robinson while both Dybal and Bergschneider had two.
