Scots Take Home Opener on Monday Night

Zoie Wall leads Monmouth in points and rebounds

MONMOUTH, Ill. (11/22/2022) — The Monmouth College women's basketball team won their third straight game on Monday as they beat MSOE 65-47 in the home opener. The Scots (3-2) had five players score at least eight points in the win and 11 players made their Glennie Gym debuts.

The Scots jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a bucket from Zoie Wall (Bartonville, Illinois) and two free throws from Jadyn Mitchell (Flanagan, Illinois). The Raiders scored the next six and led the game 9-6 with 1:33 to go in the opening quarter. Lily Harlan (Washington, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer, Tarae Warner (Burlington, Iowa) completed a 3-point play and Mitchell drained a 3-pointer for a quick 9-0 run and a 15-9 Scots lead.

Warner started the second quarter with a 3-pointer and Audrey Law (Bloomington, Indiana) made a free throw for a 19-9 lead. She missed the second free throw but Wall got the rebound and fed Law for a layup and a 15-0 Scots run. The lead moved up to 13 on another 3-pointer by Warner before MSOE closed the gap to eight. Freshmen Madison Heisch (Illinois City, Illinois) and Olivia Dinges (Amboy, Illinois) made back-to-back baskets for a 35-23 lead. Mitchell made another 3-pointer and Monmouth took a 38-26 lead into the half.

Wall scored four quick points in the paint to start the third quarter before the teams traded buckets. Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) put the Scots up 17 with a 3-pointer at the 2:09 mark in the third quarter and Wall scored to make it 51-32. MSOE hit 3-point play at the end of the quarter to close the gap to 51-35.

Ashley Jones (Abingdon, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to put Monmouth up 21. On the next possession, she hit another 3-pointer for a 62-38 lead before the Raiders scored five in a row. MSOE made a layup with 1:39 left and Lauren Millhiser (Des Plaines, Illinois) followed her own miss for a basket and a 65-45 lead. The Raiders got the last points of the game on a jumper with 39 seconds left as Monmouth won 65-47.

Wall led the Scots with 13 points and added a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Warner had 11 points and tied Wall for the team lead in assists with four. Harlan had eight points and eight rebounds while Mitchell had eight points and five boards. Jones also had eight points to lead the freshmen. Heisch and Hoy both had five while Law grabbed seven rebounds.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Monmouth played 11 freshmen, all making their home collegiate debuts. Six of those 11 players scoredMonmouth outrebounded MSOE 43-20 with nine offensive rebounds. The Scots made a season-high 10 3-pointers, shooting 47.6% at 10-of-21. Six different players made at leads one 3-pointer and four knocked down two. Mitchell is 7-for-9 from 3-point range over the last three games. Overall Monmouth shot 47.1% from the field while holding MSOE to 39.7%. Monmouth was 7-for-9 at the free throw line. The second game of the three-game homestand is at 2 p.m. Saturday when the Scots host Dominican University at Glennie Gym.
