Scots Women's Lacrosse Falls to Loras Saturday
Meldrum scores three goals in setback
MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/04/2021) — The Monmouth College Fighting Scots women's lacrosse team fell to Loras College 16-7 at April Zorn Stadium on Saturday. The Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference loss drops the Fighting Scots to 0-4 on the season, 0-3 in conference play.
"There were some positives from today," said head coach Elizabeth Demara. "There are a lot of things we need to work on moving forward to get ready for Northwestern next weekend."
The Scots fell behind 3-0 in the first four minutes of the game as Clare Brunn scored twice for Loras after Erin Conley netted the opener just nine seconds into the game. Loras made it 4-0 at the 22:35 mark when Brunn scored again.
Monmouth got on the board with 21:15 to play as Madison Meldrum (Colona, Illinois) scored for the ninth time in three starts this season. Coming off a seven-goal game last weekend, Meldrum scored on an assist from Mel Fairand (Bloomington, Illinois).
Loras scored the next three goals with Brunn adding a fourth. Meldrum bagged her second of the game with 45 seconds left in the half to send the Scots into the break down 7-2.
Brunn, the reigning MWLC Player of the Week, scored 22 seconds into the second half and added another goal four minutes later. Loras went on top 10-2 before Hadyn Deleeuw (Kirksville, Missouri) scored for the Scots with 21:11 to play.
Loras scored again before Aspen Chadderdon (Marshalltown, Iowa) found the net for her second goal of the season and an 11-4 score. The teams traded goals again with Mackenzie Holmes (Clive, Iowa) scoring for the Scots.
Chadderdon and Meldrum picked up the final goals for Monmouth as the duo combined for five on the day. Monmouth's Olivia Matlock (Lee's Summit, Missouri) finished with 15 saves.
"We are finding more opportunities to score," said Demara. "We need to work on our shot selection and placement but things are starting to come together."
