Scots Women's Water Polo get Feet Wet in Minnesota
Monmouth, IL (02/23/2020) — Monmouth's women's water polo team showed offensive balance on their season-opening weekend in Minnesota as seven different players scored in the three contests.
Scoring was hard to come by in the Fighting Scots' season-opener, a 20-3 loss to the University of La Verne Saturday morning. The Leopards raced out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and held the Scots scoreless through the first half. Becca Waxberg broke the ice in the third quarter, scoring her first of two goals at the 2:37 mark, following with another net-finder a minute later. A Miranda Pasky goal in the fourth quarter ended the scoring as La Verne's lead was too much to overcome.
The Scots stayed close in their second match of the day, a 13-11 loss to Carthage. The Lady Reds took a quick 2-0 lead, but the Scots knotted the game on a pair of Waxberg goals. Carthage regained the lead seconds later as the Scots never caught up despite a three-goal effort from Ashling Staunton. Marissa Logan and Skylar Rapp also netted two goals each for Monmouth.
Brittany Lira erupted for a three-goal outburst in the Scots' Sunday finale against host Macalester. Lira's two goals in the opening quarter gave Monmouth 1-0 and 2-1 leads before the hosts came back to knot the game at 6-6 by halftime. After a back-and-forth first half, Macalester scored the first four goals of the second half and held Monmouth to just two goals the rest of the way.
Waxberg led the Scots in the weekend scoring, netting five goals, one more than Lira, Staunton and Logan. Rapp and Pasky netted two each while also spending time in goal.
Monmouth returns to action in their home pool the weekend of March 7 with a two-day, five-team tournament.
