Shie Goes 4-0 but Tennis Drops Two Matches Saturday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/03/2022) — The Monmouth College men's tennis team opened Midwest Conference play with two home matches on Saturday. Weather forced both matches to be played indoors in Galesburg and the Scots lost 6-3 to Ripon and 7-2 to Lawrence.
In the morning match against Ripon, the Scots won the first three singles matches. Andrew Shie (Davenport, Iowa) took the No. 1 match 7-6 (5), 6-4. Brendan Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) won at No. 2 7-5, 6-4 and Sawyer Day (Cupertino, California) won at No. 3 7-5, 6-3.
Ripon won the other three singles matches and took all three doubles matches to win the match. The Scots had a chance in all three doubles matches. Shie and Guenther lost at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker 8-7 (11-9) while Day teamed with Andre Myklebust (Cambridge, Wisconsin) at No. 2 in an 8-6 loss. Nicholas Robertson (Covington, Georgia) and Matthew Simonson (Monmouth, Illinois) lost at No. 3 doubles 8-4.
In the afternoon match against Lawrence, Shie and Guenther won at No. 1 doubles 8-6 while Day and Myklebust lost at No. 2 8-5. The Scots dropped the No. 3 doubles match 8-0 and were down 2-1 after doubles.
Shie rallied to win at No. 1 singles 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 but the Scots dropped the other five singles matches for a 7-2 loss. Day lost at No. 3 singles in a third-set tiebreak 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
The Scots (0-9, 0-2) will host Illinois College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the last scheduled home match of the 2022 season.
