Sims Wins Both Singles Matches but Scots Drop Both

by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (02/22/2026) — The Monmouth College men's tennis team started the spring season with a pair of losses on Saturday, indoors at Lakeside Center in Galesburg Monmouth fell 6-1 to Illinois Wesleyan and 5-2 against Principia as freshman Chase Sims (Tiskilwa) went 2-0 in singles.

Sims, who missed the fall season while playing soccer for the Fighting Scots, won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6 singles against IWU in his first collegiate match. He moved up to No. 5 singles against Principia and won 6-2, 6-0. He also teamed with Alfonso Mares (Oak Lawn, Illinois) to win 6-1 at No. 3 doubles against Principia.

Ashur Carthan (Homewood, Illinois) also won against Principia, taking the No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-1.

"The team put in a great effort against two solid programs in our spring opener," said head coach Brian Dahlstrom. "Wins at the back end of our lineup is a promising sign that we are getting deeper. Solid start for Chase going unbeaten and he played very disciplined and consistent matches."

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Carthan got his first career singles win ... Mares had a doubles win with Carthan in the fall and now has a win with Sims in the spring ... The men host Webster next Saturday, indoors at Lakeside Center.
