Softball Drops Pair in Florida on Tuesday

by Luke Bradburn

MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/12/2024) — The Monmouth College softball team dropped two games on Tuesday with a 7-3 loss to Lakeland University in the opener and an 8-0 loss to Ithaca College in game two. The Scots (1-7) will be back in action with two games on Thursday in Leesburg, Florida.

Lakeland struck first in the morning game as they scored two runs on a dropped fly ball for a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Scots answered in the top of the fourth with a two-run triple by Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) to tie the game. The Scots took the lead in the sixth with a RBI single by Abby Winstead (Morton, Illinois).

Lakeland posted a five-run inning in the bottom half of the sixth to lead 7-3. The Scots had an opportunity to chip away at the lead in the top of the seventh with Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) on first base after her one-out single up the middle. However, Lakeland turned a game ending double play to secure the 7-3 victory.

Game 2

Monmouth suffered an 8-0 loss to Ithaca College in the second game of the day Tuesday afternoon. Ithaca got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first giving them a 1-0 lead.

Monmouth's Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois) hit a single to right field to lead off the game offensively for the Scots. Wyman stole second base and moved to third on a groundout. However, the Scots were unable to bring Wyman home after a pop fly ended the inning.

Ithaca added another run in the second inning, which they then followed with a 2-run homerun in the third. Alexis Hardy (Rushville, Illinois) was able to get on base with a pair of walks, however the Scots were unable to add a run as Ithaca continued to pull away in the fourth and fifth innings for the 8-0 win.

The Scots have a day off Wednesday before facing Lasell at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday and Occidental College at 2:45 p.m.
