Softball Drops Pair on Final Day in Florida

MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/16/2024) — The Monmouth College softball team dropped two games on Friday with an 8-1 loss to The College of St. Scholastica in the opener and a 2-0 loss to University of Wisconsin Platteville in game two.

Monmouth kicked off their first game of the day against St. Scholastica. The Saints struck first with two runs in the first and one in the second. The Scots made their way into the scoring column in the top of the fourth when Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois) walked, stole a base, and scored on an error.

Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) and Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) each singled in the fifth and sixth innings respectively before the Saints answered with a 5-run inning in the bottom of the sixth. Lewis added another single in the seventh but was left on base as the Saints won 8-1.

GAME TWO

In their final game of the week the Scots fell to UW-Platteville 2-0. McKealey Klokkenga (Delavan, Illinois) held the Pioneers scoreless for the first three innings before giving up two runs in the fourth. Chelsea Herrick (Elgin, Illinois) came in for relief in the top of the fourth and threw 3.2 scoreless innings.

The Scots were led offensively by Lewis and Marie Vega (Chicago, Illinois) who each had singles and Hucke added two walks.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Lewis had hits in six of the eight games on the trip and led Monmouth with 10 hits overall...She was 10-for-21 at the plate in Florida with a team-leading six RBI...Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) had six hits and Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) had five...Ashby scored a team-high six runs and stole a team-best five bases on the trip and also drove in five...Lewis and Ashby both had three extra-base hits...Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin ,Iowa) led the team with 15.2 innings pitched in Florida and she struck out five...Herrick threw 15 innings and Klokkenga threw eight innings...Monmouth drew 22 walks and stole 11 bases in eight games in Florida...The Scots scored 22 runs with 10 extra-base hits...The Scots were 1-7 on the trip...Monmouth will play two games at Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday at 3 p.m...The home opener is Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. with a DH against Greenville.
