Softball Falls Twice at Lawrence on Sunday

by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/14/2025) — The Monmouth College softball team dropped a pair of Midwest Conference games 2-1 and 3-1 at Lawrence on Sunday. The Fighting Scots (4-24, 0-6) return home for four MWC games this week, two on Friday and two on Saturday.

Game one was scoreless until the fifth inning as Monmouth starter Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) didn't allow a hit over four innings. Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) singled to start the fifth and Brooklyn Millhollin (Peoria, Illinois) reached on an error. Both runners moved up on a sac bunt from Alexis Hardy (Rushville, Illinois). The Scots took a 1-0 lead when Manners drove home Lewis with a bunt single before the Vikings got out of the inning.

With Kayleigh Cobb (Pawnee, Illinois) in the circle, Lawrence used a 2-out rally to take the lead in the fifth. A single, error and triple put the Vikings on top 2-1.

Millhollin singled in the seventh and moved to second to put the tying run in scoring position with one out. However, two straight flyouts ended the game.

Cobb (1-6) took the loss in relief despite not allowing an earned run over two innings. Durfee didn't allow a hit over four innings while walking four and striking out three.

GAME TWO

Shelby Covey (Peoria, Illinois) and Mackenzie Gerard (Jacksonville, Illinois) singled with two outs in the first but were stranded. Lawrence put two on the board against Monmouth staring pitcher Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) in the bottom of the inning with two doubles and a single.

Lawrence pushed the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Monmouth got on the board in the sixth inning. Covey and Gerard both singled again and Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois) doubled home a run before the Scots stranded the tying runs in scoring position.

Liz Waymire (Havana, Illinois) walked to start the seventh but three straight outs ended the game.

Greene (1-5) took the loss with a complete game effort. She allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk.
