by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/12/2026) — The Monmouth College softball team split a road Midwest Conference double header at Lawrence on Sunday. The Fighting Scots (11-19, 6-5) won game one 12-3 before falling 5-2 in game two.

GAME ONE

The start of the DH was delayed by lightning and rain. Monmouth went to work right away in the top of the first as Ella Cunningham (Dunlap, Illinois) singled with one out. Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) singled and Mackenzie Gerard (Jacksonville, Illinois) loaded the bases with a single. Brooklyn Millhollin (Peoria, Illinois) cleared the bases with a double for a 3-0 lead and Graci Guenther (Pekin, Illinois) made it 4-0 with a single. Elizabeth Waymire (Havana, Illinois) was hit by a pitch and Alexis Hardy (Rushville, Illinois) made it 6-0 with a double.

The Scots added another run in the second. Powers doubled with one out and stole third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gerard.

As Lydia Overcash (Farmington, Illinois) kept the Vikings off the bases, the Scots kept scoring in the third with a 2-out rally. Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) singled and stole second before Cunningham walked. A double steal put two in scoring position and Powers doubled for a 9-0 lead. Gerard made it 10-0 with a single and Millhollin's second double of the game made it 11-0. Maddie Hepner (Alexis, Illinois) doubled for a 12-0 lead before Lawurence got out of the inning.

Down to their final two outs, Lawrence got on the board to avoid the shutout in the fifth. A single and double brought home the first run and they added two more with a pair of singles. Overcash finished off the 12-3 win on the run rule with a pop up to second.

Overcash (4-4) threw a complete game for the win. She allowed two earned runs on nine hits over five innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Lawrence scored three in the first inning against starter Elizabeth Durfee (Arlington, Washington). Three straight 1-out doubles made it 2-0 and a sacrifice fly added a third run. The Vikings hit a solo home run in the third and added another run that inning with a walk, single and sacrifice fly.

Down 5-0, the Scots got on the board in the fifth after leaving two on base an inning before. Ashby started a 2-out rally with a single and she moved to second on a single by Cunningham. Both moved up on a wild pitch and scored on an error with Powers batting. Monmouth hit into a double play in the sixth and left two on base in the seventh as the game ended.

Durfee (4-5) took the loss as she allowed five earned runs on eight hits over five innings while walking one and striking out three. Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) threw one scoreless inning with a hit allowed.
