Softball Splits Games in Florida on Tuesday

Millhollin caps rally with 2-run hit in seventh

MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/12/2025) — The Monmouth College softball team split a pair of games in Florida on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots (2-8) lost the opener 8-0 against Emerson College before beating Fitchburg State University 8-7 in the nightcap.

Grace Wyman (Pekin, Illinois) led off the first game with an infield single to the shortstop. Shelby Covey (Peoria, Illinois) followed suit adding an infield single of her own but the Scots were turned away. Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) started the game in the circle for Monmouth and closed out the first inning with a strikeout.

The Scots had another pair of hits in the top of the fourth with singles from Savannah Powers (Volo, Illinois) and Brooklyn Millhollin (Peoria, Illinois). The Lions opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth and took a 3-0 lead.

Alexis Hardy (Rushville, Illinois) added a single and a stolen base in the top half of the fifth. The Lions scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead to 5-0. Durfee gave way to Addie Greene (Rushville, Illinois) who allowed the final three runs

Game 2

Karliegh Ashby (Monmouth, Illinois) led off the second game of the day with an infield single. Wyman drove a triple into the left-center gap to bring in Ashby. Wyman scored on a groundout to push the lead to 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first.

Alyssa Hefflefinger (Olin, Iowa) started the game in the circle for the Scots and the Falcons scored a run of their own in the bottom of the first.

The Scots opened up the second inning with back-to-back singles from Brooklyn Manners (Burleson, Texas) and Hardy. Wyman added a single to load the bases for Covey who belted a 3-run double to the left field wall to extend the Scots lead to 5-1.

Down 6-5, Addie Narlock (Antioch, Illinois) led off the third with a single followed by another single from Manners. Hardy reached on a fielder's choice and stole second but the Scots were unable to scratch a run.

Maddie Hepner (Alexis, Illinois) drove a single into left field in the top of the sixth. Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) followed with a single up the middle but the Scots couldn't pull even. The Falcons added another run on an error to extend their lead heading into the seventh inning.

Manners led off the seventh with her third single of the game. Hardy followed with a single that moved Manners to third and Wyman drove in a run with a single to right field. Millhollin drove in the go-ahead run with a 2runI triple to left center to give the Scots an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Hefflefinger started off the half inning with a strikeout before giving up a walk. With the tying run on first, Ashby caught a pop up before Hefflefinger (2-3) struck out the final batter to secure the 8-7 victory for the Scots.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Hefflefinger has complete games in both of her wins this season as she also went seven innings against Blackburn on March 1 ... She also tied her season-high with five strikeouts ... Wyman had hits in both games with four hits on the dayShe has eight hits in Florida with four runs scored ... Millhollin ,Covey and Hardy had hits in both games ... Covey had four RBI against FSU ... Monmouth is 2-0 all-time against Fitchburg State with a 12-0 win in the 2015 season opener ... The Scots had never played Emerson before Tuesday ... The Scots are off on WednesdayThey will play Marietta (OH) College at 2:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday with a game against Wisconsin Lutheran at 4:45 p.m. ET.
