Softball Swept at Cornell on Sunday

MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/30/2023) — The Monmouth College softball team split dropped both games of a MWC double header at Cornell on Sunday. The Scots (13-23, 5-9) lost game one 12-4 and game two 8-3.

In the opener, Monmouth got things going right away. Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) reached on an error and Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) doubled. After two groundouts, Warmowski scored on a single by Abby Winstead (Morton, Illinois). A double steal plated Belville and gave the Scots a 2-0 lead.

Cornell scored five runs, one earned, in the bottom of the first against Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois). The Scots got back within one in the third. Belville and MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) both reached on errors and scored on a double by Winstead. The Rams scored seven times in the bottom of the inning for the 12-4 lead and the game was over after five innings.

Leber (6-10) took the loss with eight earned runs allowed in 2 innings. She struck out four and did not issue a walk. Anna McCarty (Decatur, Illinois) threw 1 hitless and shutout innings in relief.

GAME TWO

Down 1-0 the Scots tied the game in the fourth. Beville singled, Kloess doubled and Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) drove in a run with a groundout. The Rams regained the lead against
Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) in the bottom of the inning. The Scots rallied back in the fourth as Kloess singled home Olivia Riddley (Chatham, Illinois).

Cornell scored six in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. Biancha Luna (Monmouth, Illinois) singled home Belville in the seventh for the final run of the game.

Durfee (3-10) allowed eight runs on 14 hits in a complete game while striking out two.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Leber moved into a tie for third on Monmouth's career strikeout list with 276. She also moved into eighth on the single-season strikeouts list with 95. Kloess, Belville, Luna and McCarty had hits in both games. McCarty was 4-for-4 on the day, 3-for-3 in game two. The Scots play a makeup double header at Simpson College on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. start.
