Swim Teams Split at IC as Men Win Big

Tate delviers top 10 times in two events

MONMOUTH, Ill. (11/05/2023) — The Monmouth College men's and women's swimming teams split a duel at Illinois College on Saturday with the men winning comfortably, 112-69 while the women fell in a tight race 100-92.

Men

The men were led by freshman Tariq McLarty (South Holland, Illinois) who won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.59 seconds. He also won the 100 freestyle in 49.48, a half second faster than his time from last week.

Freshman Jaeden Peters (Greenfield, Indiana) won the 1650 yard freestyle by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 19:28.79. He also won the 500 freestyle in 24 seconds with a time of 5:27.53.

Freshman Kody Coyne (Bluffton, Indiana) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.13 with Ethan Main (Oneida, Illinois) in third. Freshman Luke Foster (Galesburg, Illinois) won the 200 backstroke in 2:15.32, just ahead of freshman Collin Heslin (Nashville, Tennessee) at 2:19.71.

Foster was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.92 and senior Tristan Kennon (Flossmoor, Illinois) was fourth. Kennon was third in the 100 free with Camden Schmidt (Washington, Illinois) in fourth.

Main was second in the 400 yard IM in 5:16.15 with Brady Hild (Tremont, Illinois) in third at 5:46.75. Freshman Eli Wills (Blue Springs, Missouri) was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:22.44 and third in the 50 free in 24.35.

The 400 yard medley relay team of Heslin, Schmidt, Willis and Main won by six seconds. The 400 freestyle relay team of Foster, Kennon, Wills and McLarty won by nine seconds in a time of 3:28.64.

Women

Cally Tate (Monmouth, Illinois) led the women, winning the 50 freestyle in 26.17. She also won the 200 yard backstroke in 2:16.57, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Tate also cracked the top 10 in third place with a 1:02.22 100 backstroke in the opening leg of the medley relay.

Freshman Aiden Bach (Stetsonville, Missouri) won the 200 freestyle in 2:13.55 with Claire LaBadie (Griffith, Indiana) in second at 2:23.72. Bach finished second behind Tate in the 200 backstroke and LaBadie took second in the 100 freestyle with Katie Oberheu (Fort Worth, Texas) in fourth and Emily Davis (Beloit, Wisconsin) in fifth. Oberheu took second in the 200 breaststroke with Davis in fourth.

Mady Gaus (Herscher, Illinois) won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:39.84 and finished third in the 500 freestyle.

Nicole Fitch (Marengo, Illinois) was second in the 1650 freestyle in 21:11.89 while Rudy Poffinbarger (Rockford, Illinois) was fifth. Fitch also took third in the 400 IM in 5:37.14.

The 400 yard medley relay team of Tate, Bach, Gaus and LaBadie won their race in 4:29.63. The 400 freestyle relay team of Bach, LaBadie, Fitch and Tate won by more than nine seconds in a time of 4:06.61

The Scots will face IC again next week with a double-duel meet that also includes Grinnell. The home meet at Pepper Natatorium begins at 1 p.m.
