Toberman, Boley Win Shot Put at MWC Championships
Both Monmouth teams in second place after day one
MONMOUTH, Ill. (02/25/2023) — The Monmouth College track and field teams won both shot put championships at the Midwest Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday. After day one of the two-day event, both the men's and women's teams are in second place in the team standings.
Men
Caleb Toberman (Clifton, Illinois) won the shot put title with a throw of 14.16m, improving his standing from last year's second place finish. Teammate Blake Orwig (Wyoming, Illinois) finished second with a career-high 13.94m throw and Sam Phillips (Cape Coral, Florida) took fifth at 12.83m.
The men finished second in the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay in 3:38.98, 8/10 of a second behind Ripon. Patrick Curry Jr. (Chicago, Illinois), Riley Bernas (Aurora, Illinois), Alexander Brock (Lexington, Illinois) and Eli Newton (Dallas City, Illinois) teamed to earn eight points.
The 4x200m relay team of Luke Ditswroth (Oquawka, Illinois), Reed Bona (Dyersburg, Tennessee), Luke Jachimiec (Aurora, Illinois) and Adrian Outlaw (Galesburg, Illinois) got second place with a time of 1:30.89, .36 behind the winners.
Defending pole vault champion Reed Wilson (Normal, Illinois) no-heighted the event with three straight misses at 4.60m, his starting height. Bona took third at 4.00m and Bernas was fifth at 3.85m.
Curry scored points in the high jump with a seventh place finish at 1.78m.
Ditsworth ran the eighth fastest 60m race in school history at 7.07 seconds to qualify fifth for Saturday's 60m final. Jachimiec qualified in the eighth slot at 7.16 seconds. Peter Soutsos (Highland Park, Illinois) and Braeden Brauman (Palatka, Florida) both qualified for Saturday's 60m hurdles final. Brauman ran a career-best 9.46 to qualify seventh, just ahead of Soutsos in 9.47 seconds.
With eight of the 18 events in the books, the men are in second place with 50 points. Defending champion Ripon leads the way with 96 points and Grinnell is in third with 43.
Women
Maddie Boley (Beecher, Illinois) won the shot put with a final throw of 12.52m, edging a competitor from Ripon at 12.51m. Addi Cox (Morton, Illinois) finished third with a career-best throw of 12.50m and Kayla Braun (Evansville, Illinois) was fourth with a PR of 12.45m. Gracie Gibbons (Altona, Illinois) finished seventh with a throw of 10.80m. Boley won the discus last year at the MWC Outdoor Championships and finished second in the shot put
Alyssa Villarreal (Galesburg, Illinois), the defending long jump champion, finished second as she matched her career-high with a 5.37m leap. That distance won Villarreal the title last year but this year the winner leapt 5.58m. Maddie Rusk (Annawan, Illinois) finished fourth with a career-best 4.87m, Lauren Anderson (Cambridge, Illinois) was sixth at 4.86m and Linsey Turner (Elburn, Illinois) was seventh with a career-best 4.80m.
The women's 1600m Sprint Medley Relay team of Rusk, Ally Celus (Annawan, Illinois), Carina Engst (Bloomington, Illinois) and Lindsay Eaton (Danvers, Illinois) finished sixth in 4:40.30. The 4x200m relay team of Villarreal, Turner, Celus and Rusk finished sixth in 1:51.97.
Villarreal ran 8.17 seconds in the 60m prelims and qualified fifth for Saturday's final. The women have 46 points with six of the 18 events scored. Defending champion Ripon is in the lead with 65 points while Grinnell is in third with 35 points.
The MWC Championships continue on Saturday with field events beginning at 10:30 a.m. and track events at Noon.
