Two Scots Records Fall at MWC Swimming Championships

Sellers and McCormick make history

by Nathan Baliva

MONMOUTH, Ill. (02/20/2022) — Two school records fell for Monmouth College swimmers in the second day of the Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Grinnell. Jaidlyn Sellers (Tremont, Illinois) set a new record in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.60 in the prelims, then broke that mark in the finals at 1:00.25. Brooke McCormick (Metamora, Illinois) broke the record in the 100 butterfly at 59.84 in the finals, finishing ninth.

Sellers broke the record in the preliminary round, surpassing the old mark by nearly a full second. In the finals she swam even faster, finishing fifth and lowering her own record. The record before Saturday was 1:01.52 set by Annie Higdon at the 2011 MWC Championships. Sellers now owns four of the top five times in school history in the 100 backstroke, all under 1:02.

McCormick broke the 100 fly record set by Chelsea Henby at the 2015 MWC Championships. The old mark was 59.98, lowered by McCormick as just the second swimming in school history to go under one minute.

Kyle Jones (Parkland, Florida) finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke at 69.86.
Relay wise the Scots finished sixth in the men's 200 IM relay and the women's 200 IM relay.

Overall the women are in seventh place in the team standings with the men in eighth. The championships conclude Sunday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m.
