University of Illinois College of Law dean to give Law Day talk at Monmouth College

by Barry McNamara

Monmouth, IL (04/25/2019) — One day in advance of the nation's official observance of Law Day, Monmouth College will host a pair of Law Day events on April 30.

Vikram Amar, dean of the University of Illinois College of Law, will speak at 11 a.m. in Room 272 of the College's Center for Science and Business. Free and open to the public, the title of his talk is "Updating the Constitution through State Innovation: Reforming the Way We Elect Federal Officials." He is one of the most eminent and frequently cited authorities in constitutional law, federal courts and civil procedure.

From 2-4 p.m., the College will host "Law and Lemonade" in Mellinger Commons in the Center for Science and Business. Political science professor Andre Audette said the purpose of the "drop-in" forum is for students and faculty to discuss law-related issues, such as free speech on college campuses.

Law Day was established in 1958 by President Eisenhower, and it is celebrated every May 1. The 2019 Law Day theme - which is set by the American Bar Association - is "Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society."

Amar became dean of the University of Illinois College of Law in 2015, after teaching law for many years at law schools in the University of California system.

Amar earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his juris doctor from Yale Law School, where he was an articles editor for the Yale Law Journal. The first person of South Asian heritage to clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court, he was also the first American-born person of Indian descent to serve as a dean of a major American law school.

Amar will be accompanied to campus by 1993 Monmouth College graduate Bill Turner, who is the assistant dean of advancement at the University of Illinois College of Law.
