Volleyball Drops Season Opener at IC Invitational
Scots will play twice Saturday
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/03/2022) — The Monmouth College volleyball team was scheduled to play twice on Friday but after an early cancellation, they played one match at the Illinois College Invitational. The afternoon match against Principia College was canceled and the Fighting Scots lost to Anderson University 3-0.
The first set was even throughout with neither team leading by more than four points. It was tied at 20 before Anderson won 25-23. Layne Wright (Davenport, Iowa) led the Scots with three kills in the first set while Paige Bergchneider (Alexander, Illinois) had seven assists and Savannah Robinson (Delavan, Illinois) had five digs.
Anderson got out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and pushed it to 8-3. After some back-and-forth, Anderson pushed the lead to 19-12 when Monmouth took a timeout. The Scots took two of the next three points but the Ravens took the set 25-15.
Anderson led throughout the third set and took another 25-15 win. Amanda Dybal (Apex, North Carolina) led the Scots in kills for the match with six, one more than Sarah LaHood (East Peoria, Illinois). Bergschneider lead the team with 20 assists and freshman Lauren Naven (Dunlap, Illinois) led the team with 12 digs.
