Volleyball Falls to Hendrix at IWU Invite

MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/05/2026) — The Monmouth College volleyball team opened the IWU Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Hendrix (Ark.) on Friday night. The 25-10, 25-16, 25-16 loss drops the Fighting Scots to 1-1 on the season as they prepare for a pair of games on Saturday.

Hendrix scored the first three points in the opening set and never trailed. Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) picked up the first kill and Chloe Strachan (Reynolds, Illinois) added a pair of kills. Hendrix led 10-5 when Strachan got another kill off a Tyla Mattson (Morton, Illinois) assist. Abby Viano (Braidwood, Illinois) had two straight kills to cut the lead to 17-9. Hendrix won eight of the next nine points to win the set 25-10.

Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in set two with a kill and Celus added one as well. Three aces by Mattson put the Scots on top 7-3 but Hendrix regained the lead at 9-8. Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) had a kill and a block but the Scots couldn't get on a run. Leading 15-11, Hendrix pulled away for a 22-13 lead and then closed out the set at 25-15.

Celus started the third set with a kill and Mattson added an ace for a 3-0 lead. The Scots led 5-2 before Hendrix went on a 7-0 run to take control. Their extended run made it 15-6 before Briana Carden (Pecatonica, Illinois) powered down a kill on an assist by Isa Hughes (Chicago, Illinois). Celus had a kill and Teunis added a block but the Scots couldn't get closer than seven. Hendrix led 23-13 when Strachan and Woodard picked up kills to keep the match alive. An error ended the set and match with Hendrix winning 25-16.

Strachan led the way with six kills while Celus had five. Mattson led with six assists and four aces. Kami Barth (Washington, Illinois) and Zoe Nizzia (Pekin, Illinois) both had six digs while Teunis had three blocks.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: The teams had never met before Friday ... Mattson tied her career high from October 30, 2024 with four aces ... Teunis has at least three blocks in both matches this season ... On Saturday, the Scots play against No. 24 Dubuque at 10:30 a.m. and No. 17 Hope College at 1 p.m.
