Volleyball Sweeps Knox on Homecoming

MONMOUTH, Ill. (10/11/2026) — The Monmouth College volleyball team bounced back to trounce Knox in a Homecoming sweep on Saturday. The Fighting Scots (5-12, 2-2) made it nine wins in a row against the Prairie Fire (3-16, 0-4) with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-11 win.

Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) had the first kill but Knox won the next four points. Celus had an ace and a kill while Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) added a kill in a 5-0 Monmouth run. Knox tied the set at 8-8 before a kill from Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) put Monmouth back on top. The set was tied at 13 when Celus picked up two kills and Teunis shared a block with Woodard for a 16-13 lead. Monmouth pushed the run to eight as Teunis and Celus added kills and Isa Hughes (Chicago, Illinois) served an ace. Knox closed the gap to 21-17 before kills from Celus and Teunis gave the Scots a set point. Knox stayed alive briefly before an error ended the set at 25-19. Celus had seven kills in the opening set.

Celus and Teunis shared a block to tie the second set 2-2 before the Scots pushed the lead to 6-3. Teunis added two kills as the run reached seven points for a 10-3 lead. Celus served an ace for a 12-4 lead before the Prairie Fire won two points in a row. Abby Viano (Braidwood, Illinois) had a kill, a solo block and a shared block with Woodard as the Scots pushed the lead to 17-7. Briana Carden (Pecatonica, Illinois) and Chloe Strachan (Reynolds, Illinois) put down kills and Viano had another block as Monmouth pushed the lead to 21-9. Strachan had another kill and shared a block with Teunis for a 23-11 lead. The teams trade points before a kill by Teunis finished the set at 25-13.

Strachan started the third set with a kill and Celus made it 2-0. Two more kills by Strachan plus one from Teunis put Monmouth up 6-2. Tyla Mattson (Morton, Illinois) followed a Teunis kill with an ace and Strachan had two more kills for a 15-5 lead. Kills by Viano, Celus, Strachan and Teunis made it 21-8. Monmouth kept the pressure on with kills from Celus and Carden for match point. An error by Knox finished off the set and match with a Monmouth sweep.

Celus led the Scots with 12 kills while Teunis added to go with a team-high four blocks. Hughes had 14 assists while Mattson had 12. Kami Barth (Washington, Illinois) led the way with 13 digs and Celus served two aces.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: The match only had one lead change and one tie after the first set ... The Scots led set three wire to wire ... Monmouth had six aces and seven blocks while Knox did not record a block ... Teunis, Celus and Strachan all hit over .400 for the match and the Scots hit .295 as a team ... Monmouth is 73-21 all-time against Knox with nine straight wins ... The last seven matches have been 3-0 Monmouth sweeps ... The Scots are in action next Friday at Cornell ... The next home game is Oct. 20 against Grinnell.
