Women's Soccer Drops Opener in Double OT
Cutler Makes 13 Saves in 1-0 Loss
MONMOUTH, Ill. - (09/02/2021) — The Monmouth College women's soccer team went north to Wisconsin-Platteville on Wednesday and suffered a season-opening 1-0 defeat in double overtime. Senior goalkeeper Quinn Cutler (Breese, Illinois) made a career-high 13 saves but the Pioneers scored the golden goal 3:24 into the second overtime.
"Quinn had some incredible saves tonight in big moments," said coach Lucas Henderson. "I can't say enough about her stops today and obviously she kept us in the game."
Shots on goal were even in the first half at one each before the Pioneers outshot Monmouth in the second half. At the end of regulation with the game tied, the teams went into a golden-goal overtime of two 10-minute periods.
UWP outshot Monmouth 3-2 in the first overtime but the game remained scoreless. Alyssa Peterson netted the game-winner, unassisted, with 6:36 left to play in the second overtime.
"I'm incredibly proud of our effort tonight," said Henderson. "Quinn was exceptional, as were Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa), Jaedyn Mitchell (Rockford, Illinois) and Erica Bossard (Pella, Iowa)."
Monmouth Moments: Cutler's previous career high in saves was eight against Webster on September 14, 2019...The Scots took 15 shots in the game, nine on goal...Bossard and Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois) both had three shots total, two on goal...Seven different Scots players registered at least one shot on goal...The Pioneers had 11 corner kicks to just one for the Scots...Monmouth in next in action at Webster on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m....The home opener is set for Sunday, Sept. 5 against the University of Chicago at 3 p.m.
