Women's Soccer Grabs First Win of Season
Roberts, Gosell, Walker Score in Victory
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/18/2021) — The Monmouth College women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2021 campaign with a 3-1 home win over Buena Vista on Friday. The contest featured three different goal scorers and the Scots (1-5) outshot the Beavers 33-5 with 17 shots on goal.
It didn't take long for the Scots to get on the board at all as sophomore Madison Walker (Vernon Hills, Illinois) scored her first career goal just 4:45 into the contest. Walker blasted the ball past the BVU keeper and the Scots were off and running with 16 first half shots and seven corner kicks.
"We've scored first in three of the last four games and it has given us a boost," said coach Lucas Henderson. "That was a fantastic goal from Madison."
Sophomore Sophie Roberts (Dunlap, Illinois) scored on a rocket just before halftime to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. She took the ricochet and doubled the Scots lead with her first career goal, unassisted. Goalie Quinn Cutler (Breese, Illinois) wasn't called on to make a save in the first half with both Beavers shots going well wide and she gave way to Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) at halftime.
Buena Vista got on the board just 4:31 into the second half to cut the Scots lead to 2-1. Monmouth threatened numerous times but didn't regain the two-goal lead until the 80:27 mark. Sophomore Kimberly Lopez (Kenosha, Wisconsin) slid the ball across perfectly to senior Jordyn Gosell (Antioch, Illinois) who made it 3-1. Gosell leads the Scots with three goals on the season and she has scored in three straight games.
"Jordyn is fantastic, working really hard and asking a lot of questions," said Henderson. "She's really bought into what we are trying to do and today is another example. She has scored in a lot of ways and in some big moments.
The win is the first of the season for the Scots and the first for Henderson who was hired in December.
"It feels good to get a win," said Henderson who was doused with the Gatorade bucket in the post-game huddle. "Before today we've been close but not quite there and it felt like today we put it all together and we can learn a lot from today."
