Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight on Friday
Men's team falls to St. Ambrose
MONMOUTH, Ill. (09/08/2023) — The Monmouth College tennis teams played a coed dual against St. Ambrose on Friday with the Scots winning the women's match 6-3 and losing the men's match 9-0.
On the women's side the Scots won at No. 1 doubles with Natalie Labicki (Antioch, Illinois) and Ivana Stefanova (Streamwood, Illinois) prevailing 8-0. Kathi Ramsenthaler (Linz, Austria) and Jennifer Shimmin (Monmouth, Illinois) won at No. 2 doubles 8-3 while Kimber Calvert (Paris, Illinois) and Julia Mheidze (Springfield, Illinois) lost at No. 3 doubles 8-6.
In singles, Stefanova played at No. 1 and moved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Labicki won at No. 2 singles 6-4-, 6-2 while Ramsenthaler won at No. 3 6-1, 6-0. Calvert picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles and Shimmin lost at No. 5 in three sets, 3-6 7-6 (1), 10-6. Mheidze lost at No. 6 singles 6-3 6-1
On the men's side, Sawyer Day (Kansas City, Missouri) and Spencer Corn (Cupertino, California) lost 8-0 at No. 1 doubles while Andrew Nickols (Janesville Wisconsin) and Macaden Sepich (Mackinaw, Illinois) lost 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. With only five players the Scots forfeited at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
In singles, St. Ambrose took all five matches 6-0, 6-0. Nehemiah Declaw (Aurora, Colorado) made his tennis debut at No. 5 singles, playing behind Day, Corn, Nickols and Sepich.
The women are now 3-2 on the season with a 3-match winning streak, the longest since a 4-match win streak in Sept. 2019. They will start Midwest Conference play next Saturday at home with a 9 a.m. match against Grinnell and a 2:30 p.m. senior day match against Cornell. The men will next be in action in March when their competition season begins
