Brown (OL MVP), Personett (DL MVP) Among 10 Scots First-Team All-MWC Football Selections
Scots add six more on Second-Team
MONMOUTH, Ill. (11/15/2022) — The Monmouth College football team put 10 players on the Midwest Conference First Team and six on the Second Team as announced by the MWC on Tuesday. Senior center Derek Brown (Pekin, Illinois) was named Offensive Live MVP and senior Korbyn Personett (Pittsfield, Illinois), repeated as Defensive Line MVP.
Monmouth finished the MWC season as conference tri-champions and will represent the conference in the first-ever Cousins Subs Lakefront Bowl on Saturday in Wisconsin. The Monmouth offense had five first-team selections with quarterback Carter Boyer (Carthage, Illinois), wide receivers Nate Thornton (Peoria, Illinois) and Jake Uryasz (Farmington, Illinois), and tight end Dylan Bone (Jacksonville, Illinois) joining Brown.
Boyer played in nine games, completing 62% of his passes for 1,935 yards and 19 touchdowns. He led the MWC in yards, touchdowns and passing efficiency. Boyer also ran for 224 yards and seven touchdowns for a total of 26 touchdowns on the season. He needs 65 passing yards in the Lakefront Bowl to be the 10th quarterback in Monmouth history with at least 2,000 passing yards and one touchdown to be the 12th with at least 20 passing yards in a season.
Thornton and Uryasz have had dominating seasons at the wide receiver position for the Scots. Thornton leads the MWC with 54 receptions, 951 yards and 12 touchdowns while racking up 17.6 yards per catch and 95.1 yards per game. Despite missing two games, Uryasz ranks third in the MWC in receptions (42) and yards (655) while finishing second in yards per game at 81.9. Thornton's 54 catches are 10th on Monmouth's single-season list while his 951 yards are fourth and his 12 touchdowns are. With 55 yards on Saturday, Thornton moves into second on the single-season yardage list.
At tight end, Bone has seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown on the season. His blocking, along with that of Brown's have kept the Scots offense in gear all season. Monmouth has allowed just eight sacks on the season while averaging 6.2 yards per play and 42 points per game.
Brown joins Kolton Koch (2016) and Joe Krall (2017, 2019) as Offensive Line MVP's since the award was introduced by the conference. Brown was a first-team selection in all three years he played for the Scots (2019, 2021, 2022).
DEFENSE, SPECIAL TEAMS SELECTIONS
On the defensive side of the ball, the Scots had three other first-teamers to join Personett. Brant Baltes (Lisbon, Iowa), Tanner Tomaschke (Greenville, Illinois) and Nick Harris (Winter Haven, Florida) joined Personett on the first team.
Personett repeats as Defensive Line MVP, joining Thomas Lesniewski (2016, 2018) as two-time winners. The senior has 8.5 sacks this season and 17 tackles for loss to go with 47 overall tackles, six QB hurries, one fumble forced and one fumble recovered. He ranks in the top 25 in the nation for Division III players in both TFL and sacks.
Baltes, a sophomore defensive lineman, is second on the Scots with 53 tackles this season. He has one tackle for a loss and one QB hurry.
Harris served dual roles for the Scots as a defensive back and returner. He is tied for third in the MWC with five interceptions and tied for fifth with five pass break ups. Harris also has 39 tackles, three TFL and one forced fumble. He returned a punt for a touchdown on Saturday at Knox and has an 18.2 average on punt returns for the season.
Tomaschke leads the Scots with 74 tackles, seventh in the MWC. The senior linebacker also has five tackles for loss and one pass breakup on the season.
Punter Addison Fletcher repeated as a first-team selection in special teams, giving the Scots 10 total first-team selections. Fletcher had 33 punts on the season for a MWC-best 39.94 average. He had a long of 64 and hit a MWC-leading 10 punts at least 50 yards. Fletcher had nine punts that landed inside the opponents 20.
SECOND TEAM SELECTIONS
In addition to the 10 first-team selections, the Scots also put six players on the MWC Second Team, three on offense and three on defense.
Senior running back Devin Lawrence (Hawthorne, Florida) ran for 561 yards in eight games while scoring a team-leading 12 touchdowns. A first-team selection in 2019, Lawrence averages 5.4 yards per carry on the season and ranks third in the MWC in touchdowns. Lawrence went over the 2,000 career mark on Saturday at Knox and needs 100 yards in the Lakefront Bowl to move into eighth in the Scots career rushing list. WIth 27 career rushing touchdowns, Lawrence needs one on Saturday to move into a tie for fifth on the career list.
Joining Lawrence on the second-team offense are linemen Matthew Shimko (Jacksonville, Florida) and Colby McMillan (Spring Hill, Florida). Shimko is a repeat honoree on the second team and the two join Brown to give the Scots three offensive linemen on the postseason teams.
Defensively the Scots have three second-teamers: Tevin Baker (Kewanee, Illinois), Caleb Endicott (Saint Cloud, Florida) and Michael Lord (LaHarpe, Illinois).
Baker, a senior defensive end, had 11.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks on the season. Overall he has 36 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one blocked kick and one QB hurry. He was sixth in the MWC in TFL and top three on the Scots in both TFL and sacks.
Endicott, a junior linebacker, ranks sixth on the Monmouth defense with 37 tackles. He has five TFL and three sacks to go with two forced fumbles and a blocked punt.
Lord,a senior defensive back, missed two games but still has 24 tackles, two TFL, one sack and two interceptions on the season. He also has four pass breakups and ranks in the top 10 in the MWC in interceptions and PBU.
The Scots led the MWC in first-team selections with 10. Lake Forest had eight and Ripon had seven while Chicago put six on the first team. Monmouth's 10 first-team selections are the most one-division first-team selections for the Scots since the 2015 team had 14 on the first-team.
The Scots will finish the season in the first-ever Cousins Subs Lakefront Bowl against Concordia-Wisconsin. The game will kickoff at 12:05 p.m. Saturday at Raabe Field on the campus of Wisconsin Lutheran College in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The Scots and Falcons have met twice with Monmouth winning 52-39 in 2004 and 40-26 in 2005.
