Monmouth Improves to 5-1 on Season
MONMOUTH, Ill. (04/25/2021) — The Monmouth College men's lacrosse team won at Northland College 11-3 on Saturday to improve to 5-1 on the season, 4-1 in Midwest Lacrosse Conference play.
"The men did really well today to get through a slow start in snowy conditions and a long road trip," said coach Chris Klaiber. "We showed a lot of courage and maturity to settle into the game and start scoring in the second half."
The Scots didn't score in the first quarter and still trailed 1-0 when Mitch Perez (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) found the net with 7:48 to play in the half. Michael Casey (Chicago, Illinois) tied the game 2-2 with 1:14 left before the break.
Monmouth fell behind 3-2 just 1:05 into the third quarter and then dominated the rest of the game with nine unanswered goals. Perez tied the game with 10:42 left in the third and Casey put Monmouth on top 4-3 38 seconds later.
Kain Donohoo (St. Charles, Illinois) scored with 7:38 left and 13 seconds later Jeff Knapp (Nolensville, Tennessee) made it 6-3. Donohoo scored three straight goals for the Scots and his strike with 12:03 left in the game made it 9-3.
"Kain was a threat on offense for us and got us going," said Klaiber. "Perez stepped up like a senior and was huge for us with his three goals and two assists."
Monmouth got two goals in the final two minutes as Perez notched a hat-trick and Korbyn Personett (Pittsfield, Illinois) scored on the man advantage with 36 seconds to play. The defense shutout the LumberJacks over the final 28:05 of the game as the Scots improved to 5-1.
"Nick Thomas (Elmhurst, Illinois) was flying around making plays on defense all game," said Klaiber. "Teagan Simons (Littleton, Colorado) shut down any threat with an impressive 16-save performance."
