MONMOUTH, Ill. (08/20/2023) — A Marseilles resident started her Monmouth College career before her first class at the college.

Emma Heiser of Marseilles was one of 23 new students selected to participate in Monmouth's Summer Opportunities for Intellectual Activities program.

Known as SOFIA, the program is held during a three-week period before the start of fall classes in which select new Monmouth students work on in-depth research and inquiry into a wide range of subjects from the sciences to the arts. The projects are overseen by a faculty member and a returning student, who serves as a group mentor.

Heiser -- who is a graduate of Ottawa Township High School and a secondary English education major at Monmouth -- worked on the SOFIA project titled "The Generative Muse."

Monmouth's 2023 fall semester begins Aug. 23.

Founded in 1853 and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Monmouth College provides a transformative educational experience within a caring community of learners. A residential liberal arts college that is the birthplace of the women's fraternity movement, Monmouth College empowers students to realize their full potential, live meaningful lives, pursue successful careers, and shape their communities and the world through service and leadership.
