MONMOUTH, Ill. (03/07/2022) — Quincy Senior High School senior Jamison Reis is glad he didn't treat an unknown phone call like it was another case of spam. Because he answered a recent call from Monmouth College admission counselor Rylee Mann, he learned that he had been named one of the College's Trustees' Scholars.

"I'd probably gotten five spam calls in the past hour, so when I felt my phone buzzing, I was like, 'Oh God,'" said Reis, of Quincy. "Then I thought, 'Well, what's this one going to be about - another extended warranty?' But when I pulled out my phone I was like, 'Oh, hey, that's Monmouth, I should probably answer that.'

"I started talking to Rylee, and she goes, 'Well, I think I'm about to make your day even better. I'd like you to know that you are the recipient of our Trustees' Scholarship.'"

Then Reis said he "kind of lost my mind."

"Immediately I told my mother, and my mother's just bouncing up and down and so is my little sister, like after she's had too much coffee," he said. "It was definitely entertaining. And the next couple days are just filled with phone calls to everyone who had been on my resume and supporting me, texting me and praying for me.

"I have to be honest, it was a nerve-racking call, but it was still very enjoyable."

Reis is one of four members of the Monmouth Class of 2026 to be named a Trustees' Scholar. Recognized for demonstrating exceptional academic achievement and leadership in their schools and communities, Trustees' Scholars receive a full four-year tuition scholarship worth more than $160,000

Reis, who is an honor student and an amateur magician, said he was attracted to Monmouth following a visit he made to the campus with his father.

"I just love the campus - it felt really nice and welcoming," said Reis. "Everyone I met was just so kind and accommodating. It just felt like home."

Reis, who plans to major in business administration, said he is looking forward to being a part of the James and Sybil Stockdale Fellows Program, a leadership, service and enrichment program.

"It sounds amazing because it reminds me a lot of Beta Club in high school," he said. "I want to go into the upper levels of management and administration, and maybe even own and operate my own business one day, and that program seems like excellent preparation."

He's also interested in getting involved with the College's athletics program.

"I've never played lacrosse, but it looks very interesting," he said. "I've thought, 'This is college, so why not give it a shot and see what it's like?'"

Who knows, Reis might just have the magic touch with a lacrosse stick.
