Scots Make Friday the 13th a Lucky Day for Jamieson Center, Warren Achievement Center

Monmouth, IL (12/13/2019) — Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for two Monmouth agencies when four coaches from Monmouth College delivered donations collected over the past month by the Fighting Scots' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Monmouth's SAAC group organized an Angel Tree for Warren Achievement Center residents and collected canned goods for the Jamieson Community Center food pantry. Four coaches - Emily Thebeau (volleyball), Dan Evers (track), Izzy Demara (women's lacrosse) and Brian Jordan (tennis) - filled in for the student-athletes' on Friday's delivery detail after the last of the SAAC members returned home for winter break following the completion of final exams earlier in the week.

Jordan and Demara also serve as advisors for SAAC which has been sponsoring the Angel Tree every year since 2009. More than 50 Angel Tree requests - one of the largest field of angels in SAAC history - were filled this season. Boxes of canned goods and monetary donations collected over the past month at Scots' home games were also delivered to the Jamieson Community Center.

"This is a time of year when we think about family," said Sean Cavanaugh, the Marketing Coordinator for Warren Achievement Center. "In a sense, SAAC is our family. They've been a constant supporter of our achievers for many, many years. I can't express enough the impact they've had on our residents."

Demara, a native of Colorado who came to Monmouth in 2015, echoed Cavanaugh's sentiment.

"It really is a family atmosphere, not just on campus, but in the community," she said. "The community embraces our student-athletes and the student-athletes embrace the community they call home for nearly nine months each year. The lessons learned in this relationship in regards to helping others equal the lessons learned in the classroom. There's nothing like the family feeling in a small community."
