Scots Push No. 15 Transy to the Limit

Monmouth gave the nation's 15th-ranked team all they could handle Wednesday night, but the Scots came up on the short end of a 55-52 score with Transylvania University in their getaway game in Santa Cruz, California. The Scots led 28-24 at the half and increased the lead to 44-34 after three quarters, but a 2-for-12 shooting performance in the fourth quarter let the Scots down as the Pioneers rallied with a 21-point fourth quarter outburst that included a 10-for-12 effort from the free throw line.
Transy clawed back into the game with a 6-0 run in the final 4:33, coming back from a 50-39 hole. The Scots held TU off until a Pioneer layup with eight seconds left gave them a 53-52 lead on Monmouth. The Scots' final attempt with 1.2 seconds left missed the mark and a foul on the ensuing rebound gave the Pioneers a pair of free throws with less than a minute left to give them the final margin.
Monmouth is off until resuming Midwest Conference play at home on Jan. 3 with St. Norbert.
